There is truly no place like Marquette. My husband grew up there and I like to consider myself an honorary Yooper. I can attest to the city's true natural beauty, exciting nightlife, amazing food - and the best hiking and biking in the Midwest! Oh... and don't forget Sayklly's candy with the best chocolate in the World!!!

Restaurants: Portside Inn, Vango's, Villa, Upfront, but be sure to try the pasties from Cals or one from any local distributor. Sights: Too many to list but Marquette Mountain in the Winter time for skiing, break wall, the 'Island', or Mattsons Park in the summer. I am a South Marquetter living in Cleveland but I personally love Gainses Rock and all the great beaches. Careful of Superior though, its a frigid little lake.

Marquette is so unique. If you love nature, it surrounds it, if you love water, Lake Superior borders it, if you love hunting or fishing, you are within 10 minutes of it, if you love skiing, you are 5 minutes from it, if you love photography, you will run your batteries down...if you love people, they love you back....a small town atmosphere with a big town variety of things to do. Come and send your child to Northern Michigan University, it's here too! A lot of people have never heard of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, but those that find it and Marquette are in for a delightful surprise!!

The United States Olympic Education Center brings people far and wide to train for the summer and winter Olympics with sports including Speed Skating (a big favorite in this town), Wrestling, Weightlifting, Boxing and others. The athletes live on the campus of Northern Michigan University and are able to use the facilities. Some go to Marquette Senior High School to carry out their education while also training. It's really an interesting and exciting place to experience in Marquette.

Marquette is surrounded by beauty during every season. It is the perfect place to live or visit for encouraging a healthy and environmentally spiritual lifestyle. You can't miss the big lake and you won't want to miss the Hogsback hike or the Dead River waterfalls cliff jumping in summer. The fall colors are amazing everywhere with our abundance of forest preserves. Snowshoeing, x-country or downhill skiing, sledding, you name it; Marquette is a winter wonderland for at least half of the year. And spring, there is something extra special about spring flowers in a place that has been frozen for more than half a year. Our spring bloom is magnificient! Don't forget to visit the historic upper east side neighborhood. If we are in the yard, we will say hello; that is the kind of place Marquette is.

Presque Isle Park, road through it is 2 miles long and it is the oldest city park in the U.S.! Marquette General Hospital is a major medical center with 100's of doctors. The Peter White Public Library is one of the top libraries in Michigan. The art community is growing, with many nationally known artists living and working in the city. Crime is very low. I have no concern walking in any of the city's areas at any time of the day or night. Just took up snowshows, also bike and hike a lot. We have many areas where a 63 year old women feels totally comfortable.

We moved to Marquette 40 years ago this summer. When we announced to our family in lower Michigan where we were moving, they thought we had lost our minds. "Nothing but trees up there." We would not live anywhere else. We can view the great lake of Superior from our deck, it is a piece of "heaven" And we have changed the minds of those skeptics . Wonderful place to watch our children, grandchildren and now a great grandchild grow up to become healthy, productive citizens, two so far, have graduated from Northern Michigan University.

Marquette is the center of an immensely long, uniformly dramatic, wild, and island-studded coast -- an on-the-water paradise for the experienced kayaker or inshore sailor in summer, a genuinely arctic hiking adventure along the shore in winter.

I worked for the government for 30 years all over the world. Marquette was the place that I wanted to return to in my retirement. It has all the activities that appeal to my family. There are a lot of things to do in the out of doors, as well as cultural interests such as music and theater. It has a special small town atmosphere that has so much to offer.

As dramatic as any destination I have lived or visited. The DNR Hiking/Cross Country Ski Trail at Whetmore Landing along Lake Superior is about 2 miles long and ends at a great beach along Little Presque Isle and travels from water's edge to a 150 foot cliff and takes you thru three different types of forest along Lake Superior. Walk the "In-Town" trails or rent a bike for miles along a paved trail next to Lake Superior.

THE TOWN WRAPPED THEIR ARMS AROUND ME-FROM THE LANDMARK HOTEL, BABYCAKES MUFFIN SHOP, DOWN WIND SPORTS, UNCOMMON THREADS (KNITTING SHOP), AND THE DOCTORS AND NURSES AT MARQUETTE GENERAL HOSPITAL. MARQUETTE'S BIKE TRAILS ARE USEFUL AND FUN.

Lake Superior on a winters day is breathtaking. Sunsets on Presque Isle Park are something I look forward to and ofter enjoy. The prople are open and friendly. One good reason to visit Marquette is the music: The Hiawatha Traditional Music Festival (July 16-18, 2010) has brought traditional acoustic music and dance to the Marquette area since 1979. Marquette also has a newer Blues Festival over Labor Day Weekend, and many local establishments support and present live music.

If you need to be near water and woods, find peace and quiet when you need it, or community when you need people, Marquette will provide for you. Summer is just as beautiful as winter. Presque Isle park is a haven; canoe, kayak, rock jump, swim, hike, explore, rock stack, watch the ships, picnic, fish, or just sit in a secluded cove and put your feet in Lake Superior is all in the same place! and free. We live here and STILL and will always frequent the park and shoreline. Come visit.
